Tech Tools for Remote and In-Person Instruction

More than 250 Free Apps for Educators!

With schools engaging in remote and face-to-face instruction and in some places both, I decided it was time to update my list of free tech tools. This list includes web, iOS, and Android apps and a few extensions and add-ons that can be used for remote and in-person instruction. The apps have been catergorized to make it easy to find the tool that fits your needs and for most of the apps a brief description of what each app can do is included. Many of these apps have paid versions that have features outside of the scope of what the free versions offer but I have found that the free versions work very well for school settings and beyond.

Need an alternative to an application on this list? Check out alternativeTo for an alternative. Common Sense Education also provides reviews and ratings of many educational tools.

What are some of your favorite tech tools for remote and in-person learning? Please comment to share any tools you feel should be added to the list.

Education is one of JLA’s Focus Areas to Serve the Community

Literacy starts before a child meets their first teacher. This is why talking, reading and singing with young children at home is crucial; it forms the connections in their brains that help build literacy skills (American Academy of Pediatrics). Therefore, when childhood literacy is emphasized early, children enter school prepared to thrive and are better equipped to succeed in school and, eventually, their careers. It has been widely noted that when children cannot read proficiently by the end of the third grade…

Professional Development is Essential for Career Growth

Those that have been given the charge and have the responsibility to educate others must be committed to continuous learning. Learning is fundamental throughout one’s career. Check out my thoughts on professional development in the article I wrote for ACTE’s blog: https://www.acteonline.org/why-do-you-think-it-is-important-to-continue-professional-development-throughout-your-

Passion Projects

Passion projects allow students to tie the curriculum to their own thoughts and ideas. Their learning is truly personalized because they decide what they would like to learn and how.

This year my students delved into their likes, dislikes, and interests and created their passion projects.

What are your passions? What are you doing to pursue them?

Timeless Advice to Graduating Seniors

Whether you are a high school graduate or you are graduating from College, Grad School, or moving into a new position. There is lots of advice being shared during this time of year. Here is some advice that I have shared often:
– If you need help ask for it. It always surprises me how many people have questions or need help with something but they are afraid to ask. There are lots of people out there that want to help you! Remember to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. So help others whenever you can.
– Say yes – be willing to say yes to new and sometimes seemingly scary opportunities because you never know where it will lead.
– Manage your online reputation carefully. Post your successes, highlight your expertise, etc but remember everything you post “sticks to you like a tattoo”.
– Continue educating yourself (formally and informally) because learning never stops.
– Work smart and ALWAYS be kind.
– Be excellent. All the time, in every way.
If you be your best every day and opportunities will come.
What’s the best advice you’ve received? Share it in the comments section.

Videos and Other Engagement Tools for Personalized Learning (220+ Free Apps) #GAETC16

220+ Free Apps for Personalized Learning

Videos provide a great tool to engage students. I presented on video and engagement tools at the Georgia Educational Technology Conference on 11/2/2016. This list includes the apps that I highlighted in my presentation and many more.

I have continually updated this list every year for the past 2 years. The list originally started as a place for students to go to get ideas about which apps they could use on different projects that they worked on throughout the school year. It has grown to more than 220 free applications that are easy to use for both students and teachers. I personally use many of these apps in my classroom. Students have given input as to what works, what doesn’t work, and what should be taken off of the list.

This list includes web, iOS, and Android apps and a few extensions and add-ons. A brief description of what each app can do is provided for most of the apps. Many of these apps have paid versions that have advanced features outside of the scope of what the free versions can do but I have found that the free versions work very well for the classroom. Please feel free to leave a comment to share your favorite apps for education.
