Make learning meaningful for every learner!

Choice

This post is part of a series about the Building Blocks for Personalized Learning. The building block of Choice helps students to feel more personally connected to their learning. Making meaningful choices engages students in determining the processes and products involved in their learning. Facilitating student choice involves more than providing options for learning that are predetermined by the teacher that marginally differentiate the learning experience. In personalized learning, the choices are intrinsically significant for each student and assist learners in understanding unfamiliar content by making the material more attainable and relatable. There are particular interconnected qualities of effective choices that teachers should consider when designing learning opportunities.

Feedback: let’s build it in, not add it on

Reflecting English

Attachment-1Image: @jasonramasami

The quantity of feedback our students need after completing a task is largely dictated by the quality of teaching they have received before and during this task. I would argue that much of the best and most useful feedback our students receive happens as they are working, not necessarily after they have finished working.

Personalize Learning with 175 Free Apps #GAETC15

175+ Apps to Personalize Learning

Applications (apps) are everywhere, whether used on a cellphone, tablet, or other device. I’ve compiled this list of over 175 free apps for education arranged by category. This list was shared with a packed room of educators at the annual Georgia Educational Technology Conference (#GAETC15) in November. I personally use many of these apps in my classroom. Your Classroom Can Reflect Business and Industry

Classrooms can and should reflect business and industry no matter the subject you teach. An easy way to do this is to include elements from business and industry in your space. This can be done cheaply to keep budget in mind. Yes, it can still be a standards based classroom and satisfy administrators that visit your room for evaluations, etc.

My classroom is set up to mimic an office as much as reasonably possible because I teach business and computer science. Check out the example from my classroom. The “Information” bulletin board includes legal documents that have to be included in similar workspaces in the “real world” that I printed out from the Department of Labor website. This includes the federal minimum wage posting, a calendar of events, and procedures that students need to be reminded of. There is also a board that includes industry appropriate documents created by students to promote our co-curricular student organization Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). Students love seeing their work on the walls, even if it isn’t perfect.

You can also include interesting pieces around the room that you can refer to that relate to the different things students are learning.  I have maps, a globe, an airplane, and a camera in my room to remind students to “picture their future” and “think globally”.

What are some ways that your classroom reflects the real world that students will enter when they graduate?
